[ubuntu] Partitions for installation on external hard drive

Hello, I want to install ubuntu on an external SSD (240 GB) to use it on different PCs.
I watched different tutorials and some people only partition the hard drive in root and swap, while others add also the home partition.
What would be the best option if I wanted to upgrade the OS and the softwares without making backups?
NOTE: The guest will be disabled so safety of the root shouldn’t be a problem
